A good intra- and inter-observer reproducibility is a prerequisite when validating a diagnostic technique. In CHU Saint-Pierre renograms are usually processed by experienced nuclear medicine physicians with a good reproducibility. The aim of the research is to demonstrate that the technologist is able to process renographic data with good reproducibility. Two sets of 50 renograms performed in children were extracted from a large database. The student received both a document explaining the theoretical bases about the calculation methods of both separate renal functions and drainage and a brief training on the console concerning the successive steps of the software. He thereafter processed the data of the first 50 patients. A week later he processed the same series a second time. Its reproducibility was evaluated and the results were analyzed with an experienced nuclear medicine physician on a case by case basis. He also received interactive education about the different parameters of the renogram from a physician expert in uronephrological pediatric nuclear medicine. The student processed thereafter twice, within a one week time interval, the data from the second set of patients. The physician usually processing pediatric renogram data also processed twice. The differences between the two measurements were evaluated as well as their mean and standard deviation. A linear correlation was applied to evaluate the reproducibility of the measurements of each parameter.
The results show a clear improvement in the reproducibility of the student between the 1st and 2nd series of patients. There was no statistically significant difference (Paired Students T test) between the results from the physicain and the student. These results demonstrate that, after having received both theoretical and practical education about the parameters of the renogram, the technologist is able to process renographic data with a good reproducibility. |
