Résumé : |
As an introduction, this thesis is about functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging, a modality on the rise in the field of Medical Imaging. Its main goal is to establish, alongside with two former thesis, a solid foundation of knowledge on which professionals can rely.
Let us begin with the fact that this work is based on history. Indeed, former studies provided two important statements believed to be the basis of fMRI. Firstly, there is a rise of blood volume in stimulated regions. Secondly, the brain works as a network, with several separate and independent zones. This leads us to the next chapter, which tackles the issue of the first historical statement. In order to do so, an introduction to the physiology of the neuronal activation is proposed. Moreover, the BOLD effect, how it was discovered and what we know about it nowadays, is explained. At this point, the second statement has yet to be dealt with. This is the goal of the next chapter, which describes the designs used to trigger activation in specific regions, and the BOLD signal coming from that activation. Let us move on to the next chapter, which is about how the signal generated is captured. Thereby, Echo Planar sequences using Gradient Recalled Echo techniques are described. The last main chapter of this thesis explains why and how the activated zones appear colored on the users screen. This is the result of an important data analysis process which includes a pre-treatment and a statistical treatment of the signal acquired. To conclude, fMRI offers a wide range of applications and this is the reason why those exams will be soon used in a clinical routine with increasingly importance. Thus, it is essential for professionals to understand the basis of the technique in order to provide the best possible results. |
