Résumé : | A new development has entered the clinical arena the hybrid PET/MR scanner. However, PET/MR has been used in experimental setups for almost 20 years. The long time it has taken until this imaging modality has started to enter the clinical arena has to do with technical and practical hurdles that the clinical applications of PET/MR are facing. Tremendous intellectual efforts have been done for achieving a big technical progress, which has raised high hopes for substantial steps of progress in medical imaging. Cardiac applications for PET/MR are vividly discussed. Cardiac tumors have been identified as being among the most straightforward potential cardiac applications for combined PET/MR scanning. However, primary cardiac tumors are extremely rare. Cardiac sarcoidosis is another potentially fatal disease, which has been identified as a well-suited target for PET/MR imaging by offering complementary clinical information about active inflammation. Myocarditis may represent another interesting domain for PET/MR imaging by visualizing pathophysiologic processes and offer information on the inflammatory state. Interestingly, the role of PET/MR in the most important field of classic nuclear cardiology indications, i.e. evaluation of ischemia in coronary artery disease has been even less well evaluated. The novel PET/MRI devices may help the field of molecular imaging to further evolve, which in turn will facilitate that PET/MR will likely expand into new and unforeseen directions. Although the way to clinical use of cardiac molecular imaging seems still far, we believe that any step in the right direction will bring us closer to the target. |
