Résumé : |
Researching pregnancy populations has long been fraught with ethical dilemmas. Their exclusion from clinical trials has impacted access that the pregnant have to interventions and treatments (Haas et al 2011, Lyerly & Faden 2013). Similarly, undertaking qualitative research with some of the most marginalised perinatal groups comes with ethical complexities that may lead to these groups being shied away from.
Runyan (2018) employs the concept of 'gaze aversion' when discussing the health implications on mothers of the child-protection system in the US. This article discusses my approach to researching the maternity care experiences of women who are separated from their babies at birth, a group from whom society's gaze most frequently slides away, unless it looks on in judgment. |
