A comprehensive clinical examination and an early and accurate diagnosis are crucial for the successful management of low and high ankle sprains but have a limited value in the differential diagnosis between them.
It is essential to examine both ankles for comparison. Significant variations of joint laxity exist among individuals, depending on genetics, age, and gender. The combination of tenderness on palpation over the anterior syndesmosis and positive Cotton and fibular translation tests are highly suggestive of a syndesmotic ankle injury. Based on the mechanism of injury, clinical examination plays an essential role in guiding further imaging and early diagnosis of low/high ankle instability. |
