Résumé : | Bipolar disorder is a chronic and serious disease that is usually characterized by alternating depressive, manic, hypomanic or mixed episodes, each of which lasts from days to several months. In 1974, Dunner and Fieve [1] first introduced the term of rapid cycling, to describe a particular subtype of the bipolar spectrum, where we can observe at least four affective episodes (depressive, manic, hypomanic or mixed) in a twelve-month period. They found this subtype to be particularly resistant to lithium treatment. [1]. Other studies followed, only to confirm that rapid cyclers are more likely to be resistant to traditional bipolar treating strategies, therefore difficult to stabilise [2], [3]. The prevalence of BDRC is about 16,3% in both inpatient and outpatient population [4], it was shown to be more preponderant in females (more than 70% of rapid cyclers are women) [5], the age of onset is circa 21 years [6] and it seems to be more frequent among patients with bipolar disorder type II [6]. In most of the cases reported by studies and case reports, the onset of the disorder is typically with a depressive episode [7]. |
