Résumé : | Bladder overdistension is caused by undetected urinary retention or retention that is not treated in an appropriate and timely manner (Madersbacher et al 2012). Acute urinary retention is the result of neurogenic detrusor dysfunction leading to a reduced sensation to pass urine which allows the bladder to become over-distended. Potential causes of this neurological damage include compression by the fetal head and hyperextension of the bladder during the labour and birth process (Kawasoe & Kataoka 2020). Regional anaesthesia (spinal anaesthetic or epidural) and prolonged childbirth are potential causes that, with appropriate prevention and treatment, can be mitigated (Madersbacher et al 2012). |
