The spring ligament complex is a combination of 3 separate ligaments making up 2 discrete bundles to provide support to the talar head and talonavicular joint.
The superomedial portion of the ligament is the most robust and crucial of the constituents but is most prone to damage. This ligament complex functions in conjunction with the dynamic structures of the foot, such as the posterior tibial tendon and plantar fascia, to provide support of the medial longitudinal arch. Diagnosis of spring ligament rupture or insufficiency may be accomplished with clinical examination, radiographs, and MRI findings. Failure of the spring ligament is commonly seen in advanced stages of pes planus or more rarely in acute trauma. |
