Résumé : | Developmental language disorder (DLD) may prove to be universal, but the types of morphosyntactic difficulties proving most problematic for individuals with this disorder vary dramatically across languages. Here we group some of the special morphosyntactic difficulties seen in DLD into several problem areas, and attribute these problem areas to an interaction between generally weak language ability and particular properties of the language being learned. The problem areas discussed include the bare stem problem, the overt inflection and word order problem, the verb paradigm problem, the morphophonology problem, and the object clitic problem. These groupings may prove useful in identifying potential sources of difficulty that are less obvious from a strictly language-specific consideration of the symptoms. We note, among other suggestions, that inappropriate use of infinitives and word order errors might be traced to difficulties understanding input sentences of a particular structure, and both noun and verb inflection errors may sometimes be attributed, not to the grammatical function of the inflections but to the phonological modifications needed to combine the inflections with word stems. |
