Résumé : | The United States has had a long history of opioid misuse. Clearly, a change in our pain culture will have to occur for the opioid epidemic to improve. Federal and state laws are evolving in response to the opioid crisis, and establishing more clear guidelines for physicians and patients should follow. Until national guidelines for acute postoperative opioid prescriptions exist, physicians should strive to practice safer opioid prescribing habits. Multimodal pain control is the key to reducing opioid consumption. Prescribing fewer opioids, educating patients on opioid risks, proper disposal of unused medications, and participating in prescription-monitoring programs can help reduce opioid misuse, dependence, and related deaths. |
