Résumé : | Infection can be a devastating complication of surgically inserted prosthetic implants, such as joints for ankle, knee, and hip replacements, and intramedullary rods, plates, and pins for long bone trauma. Complications of infection include excessive antibiotic use, implant removal, reoperation, and potential amputation. Infections caused by colonized prosthetic implants are often difficult to predict, diagnose, and treat, because they form biofilms. It is important to recognize risk factors for PJI. Early recognition and treatment of PJI provide improved outcomes. Antibiotic selection is imperative for optimization of treatment, and surgical treatment strategies can include debridement and retention, 1-stage or 2-stage exchange, permanent resection arthroplasty, arthrodesis, and amputation. |
