Résumé : |
There are a variety of materials available for surgical reconstruction of the foot and ankle. When considering the type of material, the application of the material should be taken into consideration, and one that provides the best physical properties to match the mechanical stress should be chosen. With metallic implants, the potential for corrosion and tissue reactivity should be taken into consideration, as both stainless steel and titanium alloys are comparable in strength. With the advancements in the application of titanium alloys, custom-designed implants provide an alternative option for patients with complex foot and ankle pathology or trauma. It is to be hoped that further developments in metallurgy will allow the development of new alloys that, when compared with current alloys, will have better mechanical and physical properties yielding better long-term results with implants.
With the expanding magnitude and diversity of implant materials, including ceramics and modified polyethylenes, there will be improvement in the longevity of total joint replacements with alternative bearing surfaces and with the addition of composite materials. Material for the fabrication of the ideal implant is still unknown; however, a more biocompatible material is desired to produce less antigenicity and reactivity. The least reactive materials should be considered for implantation that still provide appropriate physical properties to withstand the stress and strain of the surrounding tissues in order to optimize patient outcomes and satisfaction. |
