Basketball ; Fauteuils roulants ; Métabolisme énergétique ; Traumatismes de la moelle épinièreRésumé : Wheelchair basketball is one of the most popular sports for people with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI)
Objective The aim of the present study was to assess metabolic responses and energy expenditure during a wheelchair basketball match in players with SCI.
Method. Ten wheelchair male basketball players (n= aged 18 34 years, participated in one match per week over a 10 week period (10 matches in total), with one player being assess ed in each match. A portable gas analyzer (SensorMedics 2900c, SensorMedics Corporation, USA) was adapted to the player throughout the 40 min match, to record oxygen consumption (one per game), while blood samples were drawn for blood lactate determination.
Results . Α remarkable increase in oxygen consumption was observed, compared to the initial values, with the largest increase occurring in the 3rd period of the match. At the same time, the total energy expenditure of the match increased about 12 times up, compared t o the values before the start of the match. During the 4th period, recorded the greatest increase in lactic acid, in all athletes. Correspondingly the heart rate showed a small increase at the 4th period of the match.
Conclusion. Participation in wheelchair basketball match play results in substantial increase in energy expenditure, while both glycolytic and oxidative pathway are highly taxed to meet the energy requirements.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://psychomotor.gr/metabolic-responses-and-energy-expenditure-during-a-basketball-match-in-players-with-spinal-cord-injury/
Titre : Relations of gross and fine motor skills with graphomotor skills in preschool years (2023) Auteurs : Kalliopi Trouli ; Michalis Linardakis Type de document : Article Dans : European psychomotricity journal (15, 2023) Langues: Anglais Descripteurs : HE Vinci
Ecriture manuscrite ; Enfant d'âge préscolaire (2-5 ans) ; Habileté graphomotrice ; Motricité fine ; MOTRICITE GLOBALERésumé : The study aims to explore the correlation between gross and fine motor skills and graphomotor skills of preschool children. It examines the relation of three factors of fine and gross motor skills, namely fine motor precision and integration, bilateral coordination and balance, and upper-limb coordination and agility respectively, with several factors of graphomotor skills, namely pencil and scissors manipulation, writing space orientation, handwriting control, figure reproduction and concepts about space. The sample consisted of 166 preschoolers (mean age in months 66.01, sd. 7.16), from public kindergartens in Crete, Greece. A path model that examines the relation between gross and fine motor skill factors along with graphomotor skills, with age and gender being considered, showed an acceptable fit. According to the model, upper-limb coordination and agility influence bilateral coordination, which, in turn, influences fine motor precision and integration. All five factors of graphomotor skills are influenced by fine motor precision and integration, with handwriting control having the largest influence, followed by figure reproduction. This model shows the importance of gross and especially fine motor skills on the handwriting readiness of preschool children and the significance of their reinforcement in kindergarten. Aptitude physique ; Capacité cardiorespiratoire ; Course à pied ; Douleur musculosquelettique ; SautRésumé : Although normative data for physical fitness parameters are available at International and European level, contemporary normative scores from North-East Greece are sparse. Moreover, direct comparison of physicalfitness data to European norms is still absent. Objective. This investigation aimed to evaluate the cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness of Greek pre-adolescents from North-East Greece in comparison to current European reference norms. Method. 300 pre-adolescent (mean Tanner stage A: 1.67 ± 0.6; mean Tanner stage B: 1.65 ± 0.6) boys and girls (mean age: 9.4 ± 1.1 years) completed a testing battery of 20-m shuttle run test (20m SRT), handgrip strength, and standing broad jump. Scores for each testing parameter were compared against European age- and sex-specific centiles and then grouped into quintiles.
Results. For all testing parameters, 60-81% of participants were classified as having physical fitness performance scores of moderate or lower level. No differences were noted between boys and girls. Data corroborated that physical fitness levels of Greek pre-adolescent boys and girls are among the lowest recorded in the European region.
Conclusion. This data suggest that physical fitness levels of pre-adolescents in North East Greece may be suboptimal, which strongly indicates the need for adopting large-scale fitness assessments in this particular regionDisponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://psychomotor.gr/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/LEONTSINI_41_48.pdf

Enfant en difficulté sociale ; Eveil psychomoteur ; Psychothérapie de groupe ; Relaxation de groupe ; Thérapie psychomotriceRésumé : Group Psychomotor Therapy (GPT) is a therapeutic approach that can be implemented autonomously or as a support in children with socialization difficulties and poor selfconcept. Moreover, our 20-year experience in GPT supports its implementation in children with other neurodevemopmental disorders as well. In this paper, the key-features of Psychomotor Therapy are first discussed and then, the principles that the GPT follows are demonstrated; whereas, a roadmap for its implementation isl provided. Moreover, the objectives of eachlGPT session are discussed; the sections of which the GPT session consists (awakening; therapeutic core; relaxation rituals) are described, and the benefits that the use of a group-approach offers are analysed. Finally, taking into account the quite limited research evidence regarding the effects of PMT and GPT, the need for further research is underlined. Exercice physique ; Image du corps ; Image mentale ; Mouvement du corpsRésumé : The traditional approach of the use of mental imagery (MI) considers it to be held in other moments than physical practice, and the person only imaging the movement/situation without experiencing it physically. On the other hand, in the dance field, ΜΙ is often used during movement serving multiple functions. In the exercise field, the information regarding exercise imagery (EI) during movement derives mostly from researches and questionnaires that have mainly investigated its nature (types and functions) outside of practice, so the full potential of this psychological technique, when used during exercise, remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to construct a questionnaire in order to explore the nature of EI used by gym members during their workouts, to control it through a pilot research and to acquire a first piece of knowledge on the EI used by them, initiating the scientific dialogue about this underinvestigated subject. 15 gym members completed the questionnaire [named Exercise Imagery Pilot Questionnaire-Gym Version (EIPQ-GV)] and also provided feedback for its refinement. According to the results produced by EIPQ-GV, EI is used during exercise, it serves all known cognitive and motivational functions, it differs in some aspects from the use of EI outside of practice and its use makes exercise more pleasant and less monotonous, indicating that it is a promising technique that deserves further research. Aptitudes motrices ; Méthodes Pilates ; Musculation (exercices physiques)Résumé : The objectives of this research were to evaluate two different functional training programmes with body weight, «Flowbility» (FB) which promote the fascial health and «Authentic Pilates» (AP), on physical abilities of muscles, in healthy adult students. Participants (n=58) were randomly divided into three groups, the «FB», that performed a prechoreographed programme, the «AP», that applied the authentic series of Pilates exercises on mat, and the «Control» group, that rested. The load was increased progressively. The intervention lasted 6 weeks, with frequency 3 sessions of 45 min. per week, for each group. Three measurements were carried out (initial, final and detraining one month after the intervention). Functional tests were used to measure: strength, flexibility-mobility and functionality-balance, as an ultrasound device to measure transverse abdominal and multifidus muscle thickness. Used ANOVA analysis of variance of repeated measurements, the degree of significance was set at p=0.05. The analysis of results showed that there is statistically significant difference in performance from initial to final and retention measurement. In conclusion, practicing with «Flowbility» and «Authentic Pilates» significantly improved the physical abilities of adults, at the same level and contributed to reduction of TrA thickness at the resting phase and increased its activation. Exercice physique ; Garçon ; Identité de genre ; Socialisation de l'enfantRésumé : The present contribution draws on a broad set of qualitative studies on childrens physicalactivity socialization to focus on the individual perspectives and practices of parents and of boys aged four to ten in Germany. Applying a theoretical lens informed by the sociology of knowledge, it shows how more or less traditional images of what it means to be a boy are embedded in parents patterns of thought and action, across milieus, and how these images are activated in view of assumed social necessities or by recourse to naturalizations. The analysis further shows how boys situate and see themselves in relation to physical activity, sports, and the body in the context of perceived gender relations. The overall conclusion is that physical activity, sports, and the body prove to be an anchor across all milieus for solidifying gender-related inequalities in childhood, even though particularly educationally inclined parents emphasize gender equality. Dialogue tonico-emotionnel ; Equilibre sensoritoniqueRésumé : The article presents ail explorative study on the impact of rhythmic psychomotor interv ention on the skills of waiting and self-control in pre-scholar age children in Italy. The focus skills are investigated through the analysis of psychomotor indicators, on one side, such as tonic-emotional availability and waiting times and external indicators, and on the other side, such as the knowledge of time concept and the analysis of behaviors at school and home, investigated through teachers and parents. The exploratory work made it possible to identify the positive effect of the rhythmic psychomotor intervention on the body calm, the deferral of satisfaction and the ability to anticipate, highlighted by the literature as predictors of better behavior at school and, consequently, of a more facilitated learning. The study shows that there is a close correlation between the mentioned components and opens a longitudinal research scenario aimed at analyzing the effects that such an intervention can have in preventing behavioral and scholastic difficulties. Appareil locomoteur ; Développement de l'enfant handicapé ; MOTRICITE GLOBALE ; Trisomie 21Résumé : Children with intellectual disability (ID) characteristically have motor problems. The purpose of this study was to compare differences in motor skills between Finnish children with and without ID, to compare the differences between children with ID with and without DS, and to systematically replicate Rintala & Loovis (2013). Twenty-five Finnish children (10 girls, 15 boys; M age = 8.7 yr.; SD 1.2) with ID were tested using the TGMD-3. Children with ID (including six children with DS) were matched according to age and gender with typically developing children in order to identify differences in motor skills. The findings revealed significant variability in the motor skills of children with ID as was seen in Rintala and Loovis (2013). The differences in the present study were more significant. Differences between children with ID with and without DS were also noteworthy. With the exception of gallop and catch, all remaining motor skills produced no significant difference in performance between children with DS and children with ID without DS. Overall, the lack of adequate motor skill development in individuals with ID may in the future be a further hindrance to their participation in physical activities and maintenance of active lifestyles for optimal health. Danse traditionnelle ; Socialisation de l'autiste ; Trouble du spectre autistique (TSA)Résumé : It is well know that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in their social skills. However, movement programmes have been found to enhance their social development. The aim of the present study was to examine the effect of a Greek traditional dance (GTD) programme on the social skills of children with ASD. Eight 6-14-year-old children with ASD participated in the study and were randomly classified into the control group (CG), who took part only in the physical education lessons, and the experimental group (EG), who apart from physical education participated in an 8-week TGD programme of two sessions/week. Childrens social skills were assessed with the Educational Evaluation Tool for children with autism in the field of Social Skills (Apteslis et al., 2012) that was administered to participants teachers. Due to both the small sample size and the great heterogeneity of children with ASD, the participants were faced as eight case studies classified into two groups (EG; CG). According to the results, children of the EG presented higher improvement in social skills compared to those of the CG. The above findings are encouraging; however, further research with a larger sample size and a GTD programme of longer duration is necessary if sound conclusions are to be drawn. Bien-être ; Concept du soi ; Danse ; Éducation physique et entraînement physique ; IMAGE SOCIALE ; SportsRésumé : The aim of this study was to investigate potential self-perception differences in children who participate in different organized PA programs. For that purpose, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance for Young Children (PSPCSA) was administered to 191 children (87 boys; 104 girls), aged 5 9 years (Μ= 7.1, SD= 0.7). Moreover, participants anthropometric and demographic data were also gathered. For data analysis, children were classified into three PA groups, according to the PA program they were participating in: (a) team sports, (b) individual sports, and (c) dance. (M)ANCOVA procedures were computed on participants scores to examine potential differences among PA groups and genders, using age and BMI as covariates. The results revealed that the participants presented high PSPCSA scores, irrespectively of their gender and PA program they participated in. Childrens participation in PA seems to associate with high positive selfperception scores. Organized PA clubs and childrens coaches should be informed about the important relationship between PA and self- perception in order for this window of opportunity of young childrens high positive self-perception level to be optimally exploit for their healths benefit. Education psychomotrice ; Thérapie psychomotriceRésumé : If one follows traditional scientific understanding, psychomotricity suffers from the fact that its efficacy is not sufficiently proven. Research in this field has, to date, been sparse. This article demonstrates how superficial acceptance of results from other research areas or regions may be problematic. To this end, an influential US meta-analysis, its adaptation to the local context of psychomotor therapy in the German-speaking part of Europe, and the ensuing effects are here examined. This examination leads to a perspective indicating which research results from related disciplines could contribute to psychomotor research, and how new research approaches in the field of psychomotricity should refer to them. The main thesis of this article is that meta-studies should be used to provide indications for subject-specific research, but that a superficial discussion and adoption of their results is not helpful. Éducation physique et entraînement physique ; Etudes de validation ; Evaluation du mouvementRésumé : The aim of this study was to examine a) the concurrent validity of the Movement Assessment Battery for Children Checklist-2 (MABCC-2) within Greek population, and b) the educators effect on the concurrent validity of the MABCC-2. Seventy-three educators (23 pre-school teachers, 30 primary school teachers and 20 primary physical education teachers) participated in the study assessing 584 students (age range 512 years, 292 boys & 292 girls), covering the total of age range addressed by the MABCC-2. Students were assessed both by the MABCC-2 and the Movement Assessment Battery for Children2 motor test (MABC-2-T). Concurrent validity was investigated by measuring the level of agreement (Kappa coefficient) between the checklist and the motor test, as well as by calculating the sensitivity, specificity and accuracy rates. Results revealed a moderate value of agreement (k=.28), moderate sensitivity (50.6%) and acceptable specificity (80.7%). The type of educator displayed a significant effect on MABCC-2 concurrent validity rates. Best results were obtained for preschool and primary school teachers. The findings suggest that the exclusive use of the MABCC-2 may not be sufficient to identify children with motor difficulties in Greek school context. However, the rates of concurrent validity obtained in the present study are not unusual for checklists. In general, it was stressed by several researchers that motor assessment checklists for educators usually present low concurrent validity especially in populationbased samples Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://www.psychomotor.gr/images/journal/Volume11/2-DIMITROPOULOU_pp19-38.pdf

Aptitude physique ; Concept du soi ; Questionnaire d'autoévaluationRésumé : The objective of this study is to examine empirical evidence for the psychometric properties of the long and short form of the Dutch PSDQ in a Flemish adolescent sample. The sample used in the present study consisted of 1417 participants (687 boys, 730 girls). The study provided satisfactory.
Cronbach α estimates and test-retest stabilities for both the long and the short form. Confirmatory factor analysis did not provide conclusive evidence for the construct validity of the long and short form, but the exploratory factor analysis confirmed the original structure of the long version. Further research concerning the validity is needed before the short form of the Dutch PSDQ can be widely used in practice with Flemish adolescents.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://www.psychomotor.gr/images/journal/Volume11/4-SIMONS-50-69.pdf

Identité de genre ; Mouvement du corps ; Perception corporelleRésumé : Perceived movement competence (MC) has been identified as one of the potential correlates of physical activity (PA) during childhood. The aim of the present study was to examine perceived MC differences between boys and girls. One hundred and forty-two children (65 boys), aged 6-9 years (Μ=7.6, SD=0.9 years) volunteered to participate. Childrens perceived MC was assessed with the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence-Greek version (Venetsanou, Kossyva, Valentini, Afthentopoulou, & Barnett, under review) that comprises of two sub-scales [object control (OC) and locomotor (LOC)]. To investigate perceived MC differences between genders, multivariate analysis of covariance was utilized, using age as a covariate. According to the results, age did not differentiate childrens perceived MC. Moreover, boys had higher perceived OC than girls (F1,139=7.3, p= .008, η2= .05), whereas there were no gender differences in childrens perceived LOC (p=.88) or MC (p= .11). It seems that, between 6 and 9 years, gender differences in perceived MC are small and are located only in OC, a finding that can be linked to the kind of activities children participate in. Strengthening perceived MC in both genders, through developmentally appropriate movement experiences, positive feedback and equal expectations may contribute to improving their PA levels. FiabilitéRésumé : Aim of this work was to study the repeatability of kinematic and kinetic parameters of gait in Parkinson's disease patients. Twelve patients with Parkinson's disease performed 10 repeated gait trials at their natural speed on two different days. Lower limb kinematics were recorded by a Vicon optoelectronic system, with 6 cameras at a sampling frequency of 100Hz. Two Kistler force plates were placed in the middle of the walkway, to record the ground reaction forces with a sampling frequency of 1000Hz. The repeatability of the mechanical characteristics was estimated by the Coefficient of Multiple Correlation (CMC) for within-day and between-day measurements. The results showed high repeatability (CMC>.95) of the joint angle waveforms in all lower limb joints except pelvis (CMC>.77). The repeatability of joint moments was greater at the ankle joint (CMC>.98) and smaller at the hip joint (CMC >.90). In conclusion, most mechanical parameters of gait in patients with Parkinson's disease show significant repeatability. However, during gait analysis of Parkinson's disease patients, the minimum number of trials, which ensure very good reliability, should be performed, to avoid patients fatigue. Exercice physique ; Massage ; Obésité ; Régime amaigrissantRésumé : There is a variety of weight loss programs to reduce Body Fat. In Greece, there is reported a 38% prevalence of obesity among the women, mainly in urban areas. This is a survey to compare the effectiveness of 3 weight loss programs among Caucasian women, aged 25-50 from Thessaloniki. Sixty obese women with a floating Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥25 kg/m2 were recruited for this trial and were randomly divided into 4 groups (3 Experimental and 1 Control). Their daily intake of energy was at least 1.200 kcal. The three different protocols were: Massage, Treadmill and Treadmill with Vacuum. They were applied for 12 weeks. Using the triangulation method, the processing of the data, which were collected from quantitative and qualitative research tools, showed, that the women, who followed the Treadmill with Vacuum protocol, showed the largest reductions in body fat, which were significant overall weight loss difference determined between the four groups. The factors (personal behavior, psychological, socioeconomic), that may have had affected, are presented and discussed. Accounting for the economic strategy (time and money) in those protocols, Treadmill with Vacuum alone may present a reasonable and effective option in the treatment of overweight and obesity in adults. Evaluation psychomotriceRésumé : People with intellectual disability (ID) are living longer, creating new challenges in rehabilitation services. With a longer longevity, the risk of dementia is expected to increase also within this emerging group. The ageing process of persons with ID and the best program planning is a quite recent area of research and in psychomotor field there is a major need to better understand this process. This study aims to evaluate and analyze the psychomotor competences of elderly with Intellectual Disability (ID) through a comparison study with typical peers and elders with Alzheimer Disease (AD). The Portuguese version of Éxamen Geronto-Psychomoteur (EGP) was applied to 118 participants, between 45 and 94 (67.68±13.09) years-old, divided in three groups: 39 typical elders, 41 elderly with AD and 38 individuals with ID. Findings showed significant differences in psychomotor domains between participants with ID and typical peers, except in Balance and Fine Motor Skills of Lower Limbs. There were no statistically differences between participants with ID and AD in Static Balance II, Fine Motor Skills of Upper Limbs, Praxis, Knowledge of Body Parts, Vigilance, Perceptive Memory, Communication, Spatial and Temporal Domains. Elders with ID tend to present the lowest results in most domains. The identification of a psychomotor profile as well the relative role of ID and a comorbid disorder (e.g.: dementia) will contribute to more adequate decisions regarding proper services and interventions strategies. Adolescent ; Concept du soi ; Effort physique ; Santé mentaleRésumé : The primary objective of this study was to investigate self-esteem and physical selfesteem in adolescents with a psychiatric disorder. Additionally, the association between self-esteem and physical selfperception in those adolescents was evaluated. The third objective was to examine the impact and co-morbidity of psychiatric disorders on self-esteem and physical self-esteem. The total sample encompassed a clinical group (n=161) and a control group (n=161) matched to age and gender. The Physical Self-Description Questionnaire (PSDQ) was employed to assess self-esteem and physical self-esteem. Compared to healthy controls, patients demonstrated significantly lower selfesteem and physical self-perceptions. Both aspects seemed highly correlated in adolescents with a psychiatric disorder. Above and beyond the effect of gender the combination with oppositional defiant disorder/conduct disorder was a good predictor for most subscales of physical perception.Given the low self-esteem of adolescents with a psychiatric disorder, and the high correlation between self-esteem and physical self-perception in those adolescents, movement and physical activity must be incorporated in every program at a psychiatric unit. Danse traditionnelle ; Démence ; Exercice physiqueRésumé : The purpose of this pilot study was to examine the effect of a music-based exercise program on mood state of patients with dementia listening to Greek traditional music while exercising. The sample consisted of 18 patients, all residents of Arogi Rehabilitation Centre, randomly separated in two groups, that is, the exercise group (N=12) following the one-week music-based exercise program at a frequency of 4 training sessions, for 45 minutes each session, and the control group (N=6) with no exercise or music involved. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) was administered to all residents to examine the short term effect of the music-based exercise program in terms of patients distinct mood states. Results revealed that although no statistically significant differences were noted between the two groups in all pre-measures, the experiment group exhibited significantly higher scores on vigor and lower scores on tension-anxiety, fatigue-inertia, depression-dejection, anger-hostility, confusion and total mood profile compared with the control group in post-measurements. The positive effect of the music-based exercise program on patients mood state was discussed and recommendations were made to extent its use to all residents with chronic conditions, aiming to improve mood and quality of life during rehabilitation. Enfant (6-12 ans) ; Evaluation du mouvement ; Motricité fineRésumé : The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the convergent validity of four fine motor assessment tools in 5 to 12 year old children. Other research goals were the investigation of age and gender differences concerning fine motor skills in this population. In this longitudinal study, children from the last year of nursery school were followed till their sixth grade. During these 7 years, four fine motor assessment tools were administered: The Movement-ABC, the Punktiertest für Kinder, the Epreuve de pointillage and the Gibson Spiral Maze. Generally, low correlations were found between the four assessment tools. The correlation between the Epreuve de pointillage and the Punktiertest für Kinder was the highest. The lowest correlations were found with the Movement-ABC. Secondly, significant sex differences were observed. Improvements in fine motor skills with age were noted, especially in the lower grades. Finally, girls performed significantly better than boys on the fine motor assessment tools. The results of the Epreuve de pointillage and the Punktiertest für Kinder indicate that they both measure a similar aspect of fine motor skills but different aspects were measured in the other instruments. Overall, more research on this topic is needed. Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://www.psychomotor.gr/images/journal/Volume9/first_issue/4_SIMONS_70_88_final.pdf

FiabilitéMots-clés: Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) Résumé : The Test of Gross Motor Development (TGMD) developed by Ulrich (1985) is one of the widely known test instruments for assessing fundamental movement skills in children. Changes were made to the new TGMD-3. A total of 19 participants (boys = 14 and girls =5) were recruited for the study from ages 7-10 years old in a special school in Belgium. The results showed an acceptable level of Cronbachs alpha internal consistency for locomotor subtest α = 0.76, but not for ball skills subtest α = 0.60. Spearmans rho correlations for both inter and intrarater reliability was found to be 0.85. Aspect of content validity was demonstrated using Krushkal-Wallis and it revealed age differentiation in the locomotor subtest (X2 (df=3) = 9.401, p 0.05) and the total scale raw score (X2 (df=3) = 7.12, p=0.07). The Spearmans rho statistics revealed acceptable value for subtest correlation with total scale raw score for the locomotor subtest (rs=0.85) and ball skill subtest (rs=0.70). In conclusion, the TGMD-3 demonstrated acceptable level of interrater and intrarater reliability and some content validity aspects. However, cautioned is needed in generalizing the results. Développement de l'enfant ; Interaction mère enfant ; Trouble déficitaire de l'attention (TDA)Résumé : Poor-quality infancy parenting is a risk factor for externalizing problems in developmental periods. The aim of this longitudinal research was to evaluate association between the quality of mother-child interaction at 9 months and childs attention disorders at school age. The participants were 27 mother-child dyads. At child 9 months, mother-infant interactions were video-recorded and codified by the Neuropsychomotor video analysis for parent and child interaction. At 6 years, Conners Parent Rating Scales-Revised was administered to the mothers to assess attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.
The results indicated that the quality of early dyadic interaction was related to attention disorders in subsequent development. Maternal and child nonresponsive interactive style, particularly mothers aggressive behaviors and infant passive behaviors, were risk factors for childs attention problems at school age. Its necessary to carry out early screening and intervention to prevent behavior problems in children.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://www.psychomotor.gr/images/journal/Volume8/first_issue/4-CAIATI_49_65.pdf

The possible relationship between perception (visual and auditory) and spatial orientation will be examined. Other objectives are the investigation of developmental and gender differences concerning spatial orientation. Children were recruited for this study from the last year of nursery school, and were monitored for 7 years. Each year the Piaget test for spatial orientation, the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills for visual perception and the Stambak Rhythm test for auditory perception were administrated. The Piaget test was fairly correlated with the Test of Visual Perceptual Skills and with the Stambak Rhythm test, which indicates that visual and auditory perception are related to spatial orientation. Secondly, a positive evolution of spatial orientation in function of age was found, mainly in the first grades of elementary school. No significant gender differences concerning spatial orientation were noted.
