Background: Overhead athletes are exposed to shoulder injuries, and both glenohumeral
range of motion (GH ROM) deficit and rotator cuff (RC) weakness are risk factors for shoulder injuries. The self-assessment corner (SAC), is an innovative method that allows athletes to measure themselves their active GH ROM and isometric RC strength. Objective: Establishing correlations between the SAC method and three upper body functional tests: the Seated Medicine Ball Throw (SMBT), Closed Kinetic Chain Upper Extremity Stability Test (CKCUEST) and Y-balance test-Upper Quarter (YBT-UQ), in male volleyball players. The aim is to determine whether the SAC method could be used for shoulder injuries prevention. Study design: cross-sectional study Methods: 15 healthy volleyball players between 18 and 25 years old were included. They performed both the SAC ROM and SAC strength, in IR and ER, in a randomized order. Then, they performed the three functional tests in a randomized order. Bilateral comparisons between dominant and non-dominant arms were realised between tests. Results: No significant correlations were observed between the SMBT and the SAC method. The CKCUEST was weakly correlated to the SAC strength but not correlated to the SAC ROM. The YBT-UQ showed low to moderate correlations with the SAC ROM. When comparing the SAC method to the three tests combined, moderate to strong correlations appeared. Conclusion: This is the first study comparing the SAC method to functional tests. The small sample size did not allow to highlight strong correlations, but some interesting correlations were still found. We suggest that additional similar studies should be carried out in larger samples and including different overhead sports to obtain more significant results. |
