Acclimatation ; Adaptation à l'aide auditive ; Aides auditives ; Reconnaissance auditive ; Sujet âgéRésumé : Objectives: Audiologists and hearing aid users (HAUs) generally agree that an adaptation period is needed following the first hearing aid (HA) experience. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the acclimatization of older adult listeners with hearing loss to HAs using listening effort and behavioral measures.
Design: Participants (N=47) were older adults with mild to moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss. Thirty-two participants were new HAUs and 15 participants were experienced HAUs. New HAUs were randomly assigned to one of two groups: noise reduction algorithms and directional microphones activated or noise reduction algorithms and directional microphones deactivated. Speech recognition in noise and listening effort were assessed on 8 different occasions during a 10-month period. A dual-task paradigm was used to measure the listening effort deployed to recognize speech in noise. The primary task consisted of the Hearing in Noise Test which also served as the behavioral speech in noise measure. The secondary task was a tactile pattern-recognition task in which participants had to identify a sequence of three tactile stimuli that varied in duration. The two listening effort outcomes were the proportional dual-task cost and the response time on the secondary task. Cognitive abilities, including working memory and speed of processing, were evaluated using the Reading Span Test and the Digit Symbol Substitution Test, respectively.
Results: Results show a significant time*group interaction. Both groups of new HAUs showed improvement over time in speech in noise performances (change of ~2 dB signal to noise ratio) and the experienced HAUs did not improve over time. The acclimatization effect was observed over a period of 4 weeks. There was no significant change over time on both measures of listening effort. There was no association between amplitude of acclimatization and the cognitive abilities measured.
Conclusion: An acclimatization effect following HA experience was observed. Specifically, the new HAUs displayed a clinically significant change of 2 dB in signal to noise ratio on the Hearing in Noise Test 4 weeks following their initial fitting. We hypothesized that extended use (up to 13 months) of an adaptive algorithm with integrated directionality and noise reduction, OpenSound Navigator (OSN), would result in improved performance on auditory, cognitive, academic, and caregiver- or self-report measures compared with a control, omnidirectional algorithm (OMNI).
Design: Forty children aged 6 to 13 years with mild to moderate/severe symmetric sensorineural hearing loss completed this study. They were all experienced hearing aid users and were recruited through the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Division of Audiology. The children were divided into 20 pairs based on similarity of age (within 1 year) and hearing loss (level and configuration). Individuals from each pair were randomly assigned to either an OSN (experimental) or OMNI (control) fitting algorithm group. Each child completed an audiology evaluation, hearing aid fitting using physically identical Oticon OPN hearing aids, follow-up audiological appointment, and 2 research visits up to 13 months apart. Research visit outcome measures covered speech perception (in quiet and in noise), novel grammar and word learning, cognition, academic ability, and caregiver report of listening behaviors. Analysis of outcome differences between visits, groups, ages, conditions and their interactions used linear mixed models. Between 22 and 39 children provided useable data for each task.
Results: Children using the experimental (OSN) algorithm did not show any significant performance differences on the outcome measures compared with those using the control (OMNI) algorithm. Overall performance of all children in the study increased across the duration of the trial on word repetition in noise, sentence repetition in quiet, and caregivers' assessment of hearing ability. There was a significant negative relationship between age at first hearing aid use, final Reading and Mathematical ability, and caregiver rated speech hearing. A significant positive relationship was found between daily hearing aid use and study-long change in performance on the Flanker test of inhibitory control and attention. Logged daily use of hearing aids related to caregiver rated spatial hearing. All results controlled for age at testing/evaluation and false discovery rate.
Conclusions: Use of the experimental (OSN) algorithm neither enhanced nor reduced performance on auditory, cognitive, academic or caregiver report measures compared with the control (OMNI) algorithm. Acclimatation ; Changement climatique ; Climat ; Débat ; Dialogue ; Europe ; Géohistoire ; Météorologie ; Planète Terre ; Réchauffement de la planète ; SociétéRésumé : Pourquoi s’intéresser à une géohistoire du climat en Europe occidentale, avant l’ère industrielle, alors que nos regards sont tendus vers un avenir que beaucoup nous décrivent comme sombre, voire apocalyptique ? Cette tension entre passé, présent et futur est pourtant constitutive d’une démarche scientifique capable d’alimenter des débats essentiels pour l’avenir de nos sociétés. Cependant l’ère pré-industrielle reste comme hors champ, alors que des connaissances nécessaires manquent encore souvent pour juger sereinement des évolutions futures.
Le climat est par essence changeant, et les sociétés se sont donc constamment adaptées à ces évolutions, qui, notons-le, ne sont jamais entièrement négatives ou positives. Changement ne veut pas forcément dire dégradation, et aucune société ne réagit de manière uniforme face à ces changements climatiques ou environnementaux, car le rôle des représentations et des imaginaires est au moins aussi important que celui des pratiques et des capacités matérielles d’adaptation.
Les exemples européens, explorés dans ce volume, permettent de faire le point de manière très rigoureuse et documentée sur les changements passés du climat, ou plutôt, devrait-on dire, des climats. Le climat ne devrait pas être l’apanage des géosciences ou des seules sciences de la nature.
Il faut rappeler ce fait avec force, car le débat a été quelque peu confisqué par les sciences « dures » alors que le climat a des aspects multiples qui ressortissent aussi aux sciences de la société. Or, la géographie et l’histoire, dans ce foisonnement d’approches, ont un rôle bien particulier à jouer : elles permettent de faire dialoguer de manière fructueuse sciences de la Nature et sciences de l’Homme. Car c’est bien cette articulation qui rend possible la compréhension de l’objet climat, de sa complexité et de son ambiguïté aussi.
Parler de géohistoire, terme lancé par Fernand Braudel mais rendu opératoire grâce aux travaux de Christian Grataloup, c’est poser d’emblée la nécessité méthodologique du dialogue entre passé et présent. C’est aussi, en mettant l’accent sur la période pré-industrielle, affirmer que le passé est riche d’enseignements pour l’avenir. Cette approche pluridisciplinaire, nous permet de poser un regard dépassionné sur des situations extraordinairement variées.
Cela passe aussi par la production et l’analyse de documents et de graphiques originaux qui sont indispensables pour avoir une vision la plus complète du sujet.
Ce dossier montre enfin, s’il en était encore besoin, les liens étroits et nécessaires entre histoire, géographie et enseignement moral et civique.Note de contenu : - Un réchauffement global et durable ?

This research aimed to investigate female emerging adult students’ self-perception in relation to their adjustment to academic context in France.
Method
First, a preliminary study was a validation of the French version of the Self-Perception Profile for College Students (SPPCS, Neeman & Harter, 2012). Second, the study explored freshman year emerging adult females’ self-perception profiles based on the SPPCS, and their association with adjustment to academic context (depression and academic results).
Results
Cluster analysis revealed seven self-perception profiles characterized by both global self-worth and self-esteem domains. These profiles were differently associated with positive and negative adjustment.
Conclusion
