Maladie articulaire dégénérative et progressive, étant la forme la plus courante de l'arthrite, surtout chez les personnes âgées. On pense que la maladie ne résulte pas du processus de vieillissement, mais plutôt des changements biochimiques et des forces biomécaniques agissant sur le cartilage articulaire.
