PhytotherapieRésumé : Background and purpose
In Asian countries, herbal medicines have been used to treat Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) as an adjunctive therapy. This review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of herbal medicine on treating CSDH and preventing recurrent CSDH.
Methods
A literature search was conducted on PubMed, CENTRAL, Scopus, CiNii, KTKP, NDSL, OASIS, and CNKI for randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effects of herbal medicines on CSDH.
Results
Seven studies (n = 646) were included. The overall methodological quality of these studies was low. In the herbal group, the meta-analysis indicated statistically significant improvements in the total effective rate and recurrence rate as compared with those in the non-herbal group. Herbal treatments were found to be relatively safe.
Conclusion
Herbal medicines might be efficacious in the management of CSDH and prevent its recurrence. Further rigorous studies will have to be conducted in order to make more definite conclusions.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268660

Type de document : Article Auteurs : Heidrun Männle ; Felix Momm ; Jutta Hübner ; Karsten Münstedt Année de publication : 2021 Article en page(s) : 101305 Note générale : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ctcp.2021.101305 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Background
and purpose: Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is frequently used among cancer patients. It is unclear whether and how far patients adapt CAM to the treatment situation. The objective is to assess the changes of CAM use between radiotherapy for breast cancer and the follow-up.
Materials and methods
107 patients who participated in a study assessing the possible effects of vitamin D and selenium on radiation-induced skin toxicity completed the CAM-PRIO (Working Group for Prevention and Integrative Oncology of the German Cancer Society) questionnaire during and after radiotherapy. The results were compared.
Results
Overall, 79.8% of the patients used at least one CAM method. Supplementation with vitamin D (49.4%) and selenium (28.7%) and prayer (37.1%) were the methods most used. After completing radiotherapy, many patients started using selenium, vitamin D, relaxation techniques, and yoga to a greater extent. Prior chemotherapy or concurrent endocrine treatments were not associated with the changes in CAM use.
Conclusion
CAM use is mainly reported to be a static phenomenon. However, this study shows that this is not the case and that after the end of radiotherapy patients started using new CAM methods or increased the number of methods used.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268665

This randomized study aimed to evaluate the effect of green tea extract (GTE) intake on clinical and neurophysiological parameters in patients with mild-to-moderate diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
Patients and methods
The present study included 194 patients with DPN. Patients were randomized into two treatment arms: GTE (n = 96) and placebo (n = 98) arms who received allocated treatment for 16 weeks. Symptoms of DPN were assessed using Toronto Clinical Scoring System (TCSS). Sensorineural pain was assessed using visual analog scale (VAS). Neural dysfunction was evaluated using the vibration perception thresholds (VPT). Assessments were made at baseline and after 4, 8, and 16 weeks of starting treatment.
Results
At baseline and after 4 weeks of treatment, VAS, TCSS and VPT were comparable in the studied groups. However, after 8 weeks of treatment, patients in GTE group expressed lower VAS scores, significantly lower TCSS scores and significantly lower VPT. As treatment continued, the differences between groups regarding the outcome parameters became more evident at 16 weeks.
Conclusions
GTE intake may have a beneficial value in treatment of DPN.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268670

Use of CAT has increased in the past decade. However, it is unclear if this has impacted nursing practice. The purpose of this study was to explore CAT use and beliefs of academic and clinical nurses.
Materials and methods
A cross-sectional design using an electronic survey was sent to 1000 clinical and academic nurses in the US.
Results
Academic and clinical nurses were more alike than different, and of the contextual factors that impacted CAT use, lack of knowledge was most cited. Faculty were most likely to teach that which they were knowledgeable about and nurses were most likely to use what was taught in school.
Conclusions
There is a need for a standardized CAT curriculum for schools of nursing in the US to facilitate knowledge and use of CAT, but to also train nurse scientists who can develop the clinical research needed to support practice decisions.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268708

Pain during PB was significantly decreased by the addition of intracapsular lidocaine anesthesia. However, PB is invasive procedure and can be a distressing experience for patients. In the last decade numerous environmental, technological and pharmacological factors have been utilized to reduce anxiety and pain associated with urological procedures. Music is increasingly recognized as a cheap and effective means for relieving anxiety and pain during a variety of surgical and endoscopic procedures. However, it may be difficult to clarify if music has a real impact on pain. In light of these considerations, the aim of this mini-review is to present the use of music on anxiety and pain during prostate biopsy in ambulatory care setting, and to suggest the most appropriate and effective standards that could be useful for practicing urologists. Titre : Combination of metronidazole and pearl powders for the treatment of stage 2 pressure injury wounds: Case report and literature review Type de document : Article Auteurs : Jinglin Guo ; Fang Ji ; Xue Zhang ; Jing Han ; Ju Zhang Année de publication : 2021 Article en page(s) : 101323 Note générale : https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ctcp.2021.101323 Langues : Anglais (eng) Résumé : Pressure injury (PI) is a worldwide health problem that has attracted widespread attention from scientific and clinical research communities. PI incidence correlates with the increase of the aging population. In this situation, it is crucial to select effective and affordable drugs for patients and healthcare systems. Herein, we report a case of a 94-year-old female with a stage 2 PI wound, which was treated topically using a novel combination of mixed powders: metronidazole and nano pearl powders. Metronidazole is the preferred option to treat infected wounds due to its excellent antibacterial ability. However, some drawbacks have limited the use of metronidazole in PI wound management, such as its poor capacity to accelerate wound closure. Pearl powder has a strong capacity to promote wound healing and closure but has not been effective at resisting wound infection. To take advantage of powdered drugs' wound treatment properties and accelerate PI wound healing, we prepared powdered mixtures for wound application. Both drugs are cost-effective and were beneficial to wound healing. Therefore, the combination of metronidazole and pearl powders offer a promising choice to patients with PI wounds. and purpose: Postoperative pain in the pterygium of the eye seriously affects patient recovery. This study was conducted to assess the efficacy of auricular point acupressure treatment on post-operative recovery in patients after pterygium surgery.
Materials and methods
This was a pilot, randomized controlled study. A total of 60 patients (60 eyes) were randomly assigned to two groups. After pterygium surgery, the auricular group was treated using ear acupressure (acupressure points with Cowherb seeds) and the control group was treated using sham auricular therapy (acupressure points without Cowherb seeds). Both groups were treated for one week. Outcome measures included pain score, corneal epithelial score, best-corrected visual acuity, and recurrence rate.
Results
Fifty-three patients completed the study. The mean pain scores and corneal epithelial scores were significantly reduced over time in the auricular group compared with those in the control group (p 0.05).
Conclusion
Auricular point acupressure accelerates corneal epithelium reconstruction and suppresses postoperative pain, making it an ideal adjunct treatment for postoperative pterygium recovery.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268715

Reiki has been shown to reduce stress, pain levels, help with depression/anxiety, increase relaxation, improve fatigue, and quality of life. In this pilot randomized, double-blinded, and placebo-controlled study, the effects of Reiki on heart rate, diastolic and systolic blood pressure, body temperature, and stress levels were explored in an effort to gain objective outcome measures and to understand the underlying physiological mechanisms of how Reiki may be having these therapeutic effects on subjective measures of stress, pain, relaxation, and depression/anxiety. Forty eight (n = 48) subjects were block randomized into three groups (Reiki treatment, sham treatment, and no treatment). The changes in pre- and post-treatment measurements for each outcome measure was analyzed through analysis of variance (ANOVA) post hoc multiple comparison test, which found no statistically significant difference between any of the groups. The p-value for the comparison of Reiki and sham groups for heart rate was 0.053, which is very close to being significant and so, a definitive conclusion can not be made based on this pilot study alone. A second study with a larger sample size is warranted to investigate this finding further and perhaps with additional outcome measures to look at other possible physiological mechanisms that may underlie the therapeutic effects of Reiki. This study explores the perspectives of expectant parents on the influence of a single antenatal class incorporating education on childbirth physiology and relaxation techniques.
Method
The data for this qualitative descriptive study were collected via in-depth interviews with six women and three birth partners.
Findings
An enhanced understanding of childbirth physiology formed a different way of thinking about childbirth, inspired and motivated the exertion of the learnt relaxation techniques which led to a deep sense of calmness associated with increased confidence and reduced fear. However, reaching such sense of calmness during childbirth required a space for relaxation which was influenced by birth attendants. An overarching theme of a positive outlook towards childbirth was identified.
Conclusion
Including education on childbirth physiology and a range of relaxation techniques may reduce fear, empower prospective parents and positively influence their experiences of pregnancy and childbirth.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268720

Total knee replacement is the most effective intervention for late-stage osteoarthritis; however, a major concern is postoperative recovery of physical function. This randomised controlled trial evaluated the effects of acupuncture with low-level laser therapy (ALLLT) on early outcomes of physical function after total knee replacement.
Materials and methods
Eighty-two osteoarthritis patients were recruited and randomly assigned to the experimental group receiving ALLLT or the control group receiving sham ALLLT without laser beam output. Physical function was evaluated by assessing knee joint flexion and stiffness on days 1, 2, and 3 after total knee replacement.
Results
Generalised estimating equations revealed a significant difference between the two groups in joint flexion. The experimental group displayed better joint flexion and less stiffness on days 2 and 3 than did the control group.
Conclusion
ALLLT can facilitate the recovery of physical function, as evidenced by knee joint flexion and stiffness, in patients receiving total knee replacement.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268721

and Purpose: Breast pain is a common condition presented at breast care clinics and bras are often recommended to reduce symptoms, although criteria and pathways for obtaining appropriate bras are limited. This multi-study, randomised controlled trial (RCT) aimed to establish criteria and performance variables to prescribe bras for breast pain patients, to implement this bra prescription, and evaluate whether, compared to standard care alone, the bra prescription improves breast pain and quality of life (QoL).
Materials and methods
Eighteen breast pain patients from a UK hospital were assigned to standard care or bra prescription groups and completed the study. Bra prescription patients were prescribed a bra to wear every day for eight weeks. Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC), breast pain intensity, QoL, and adherence were assessed.
Results
Between-groups there were no differences in baseline breast pain or QoL and no differences in PGIC or breast pain following the intervention. Within-groups, improvements in QoL within bra prescription patients were identified.
Conclusion
This study developed a framework for bra prescription for breast pain patients and the intervention demonstrated improvements in QoL.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268723

Animal assisted interventions (AAI) have been used in different contexts including oncology/palliative care and can improve mood, quality of life and wellness. The goal of this review was to evaluate studies about AAI and its effects on oncological/palliative care patients.
Methods
The search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus and Lilacs databases. The inclusion criteria were original articles that measured quantitatively the health-related outcomes of an AAI on oncological/palliative care patients.
Results
Ten studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Benefits related to the AAI were described. Mood, pain perception and quality of life seemed to be the variables that had improvement with the intervention. Due to the small sample sizes/heterogeneous methodologies, additional analyses could not be performed.
Conclusions
AAI can be an important tool for improving psychosocial/physiological parameters in cancer/palliative care patients. Further well designed studies are needed to provide a better knowledge of the AAI benefits in this setting.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268724

This paper summarizes the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspectives, biomedical findings, and TCM managements for EH-SF52 in modern times. EH-SF52 is generally identified as an EH individual presenting with headache, dizziness, poor sleep quality, tinnitus, facial flushing, fatigue, signs of mild dehydration, and whom are highly irritable individuals with a tendency to overthink, be competitive, or be aggressive. The proposed EH-SF52 model features a state of autonomic imbalance and vascular changes that accounts for the above symptoms. TCM managements for EH-SF52 includes Chinese herbal medication, acupuncture, qigong, taichi, massage, food therapy, as well as lifestyle changes, which targets symptomatic alleviation and blood pressure reduction in a multi-mechanistic manner. An increasing shift towards integrated practice of TCM and western medicine in EH-SF52 requires effective communication between both disciplines. Recurrence is a major obstacle to improve the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) has been routinely used as an adjuvant therapy in treating HCC, but efficacy of TACE in preventing the recurrence of HCC remains unsatisfactory. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of a traditional herbal medicine (THM) therapy and TACE in preventing tumor recurrence and improving survival in postsurgical patients with HCC.
Materials and methods
A total of 1506 HCC patients were enrolled from January 2008 to June 2017, including 262 patients who received THM therapy and 1244 patients who were treated with TACE. All patients were followed up until the occurrence of outcome event or June 30th, 2019. The recurrence-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) were calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and the differences of RFS and OS between THM group and TACE group were analyzed by the log-rank test. Factors affecting the RFS or OS among these patients were assessed by the Cox proportional hazard regression model. A nomogram was built with the factors based on the Cox regression analysis to predict the prognosis.
Results
The 1-, 3-, and 5-year RFS were 91.0%, 68.3%, and 49.7%, respectively, in the THM group and 79.4%, 38.6%, and 19.3%, respectively, in the TACE group. The RFS in the THM group was significantly higher than that of the TACE group (P = 6.2 × 10−11). The 1-, 3-, and 5-year OS were significantly improved in the THM group as compared to those in the TACE group (94.3%, 65.2%, and 41.4% vs. 82.7%, 46.0%, and 25.4%, P = 2.2 × 10−11). Multivariate analysis revealed that serum AFP level ≥400 ng/mL, HBV DNA load ≥500 copies/mL, TNM stage III-IV, tumor diameter ≥5 cm, presence of MVI, and multiple tumor nodules were independent risk factors for RFS, while complete tumor encapsulation and THM therapy were protective factors for RFS and OS. The nomogram demonstrated good accuracy in predicting RFS and OS, with the adjusted C-index of 0.748 and 0.796, respectively.
Conclusion
The efficacy of THM therapy was superior to that of TACE in preventing recurrence and improving survival for HCC patients after hepatectomy.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268737

To conduct a retrospective observational pilot study of babies who received OMT in the newborn nursery compared to those who did not, by quantifying their outpatient health issues in the first 6 months of life, and to determine the feasibility of further definitive randomized controlled trials of a similar nature.
Design
Retrospective chart review of the first 6 months of life from pediatric clinic records of 58 case-matched pairs of children, half of whom received OMT as part of their routine newborn care by virtue of their physician call assignment to the author. The sample from which the case-matched control group was chosen were babies who had received routine allopathic newborn care without OMT. Both groups received their pediatric care in the same academic ambulatory clinic and received no further OMT.
Methods
Outpatient paper chart review consisted of tabulation by points of the following variables: mention of spitting/vomiting, gassiness, food intolerance, irritability/sleeplessness, colic suggested or diagnosed, episodes of otitis media, frequency of antibiotics given, frequency of upper respiratory infections, frequency of lower respiratory problems, diarrhea, and rashes, separated by month of visit in which the variable was reported.
Results
Exploratory analysis by Pearson Chi-square yielded a few statistically significant differences between the 2 groups, in favor of the OMT-treated group, including Month 2 food intolerance (Χ21 = 4.14, P = .04), Month 3 colic suggested (Χ21 = 4.14, P = .04), Month 5 spitting/vomiting (Χ21 = 8.59, P = .003), and Month 5 antibiotic usage (Χ21 = 6.33, P = .012).
Conclusions
Findings point to the need for further research in this area based on the suggestion that OMT given to a newborn can positively affect that baby's short-term and quite possibly long-term health, specifically related to GI complaints and irritability. Other studies would benefit from a variety of methodologic changes, including correlation of timing of administration of OMT with possible symptoms and changes in those symptoms over longer periods of observation, as well as correlation of anatomic osteopathic findings with specific symptoms.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268738

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) as one of the most common ailments of gastrointestinal system diminishes quality of life and impairs physical functioning and work productivity. Proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs), such as omeprazole play a more dominant role in amelioration of GERD symptoms; nonetheless, there is a growing concern about their side effects. According to traditional Persian medicine (TPM), the use of rose oil is recommended to alleviate GERD symptoms.
Materials and methods
Therefore, a randomized double-blind controlled trial was performed on 70 subjects who were randomly enrolled in two groups and received either rose oil softgel or omeprazole capsule combined with the placebo. Data were collected within 3 sessions of visit using the Mayo-gastroesophageal reflux questionnaire (GERQ).
Results
Although, our findings showed that reflux symptoms were decreased in both groups after receiving medicine and the decrement was significant in treatment group, before and after the intervention, this decrease was not significant between two groups.
Conclusion
Given that the rose oil used in this study was produced according to the Iranian method and effective ingredients of Rosa damascena were preserved in sesame oil in production process, it seems that effectiveness of this product can be due to its tonic and enlivening properties. Consumption of rose oil soft capsule alleviates cardinal GERD symptoms similar to omeprazole. It seems that rose oil can have the same effects as PPIs in treatment of GERD but with no side effects due to its different mechanisms of action.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268743

A substantial proportion of European and American people now use healthcare options known as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). This study aimed to understand the processes and decisional pathways through which chronic illness patients choose treatments outside of regular allopathic medicine.
Materials and methods
This qualitative study used Charmaz's constructivist grounded theory methods to collect and analyze data. Using theoretical sampling, 21 individuals suffering from chronic illness and who had used CAM treatment participated in face-to-face in-depth interviews conducted in Miami/USA.
Results
Seven overarching themes emerged from the data to describe how and why people with chronic illness choose CAM treatments. These themes included 1) influences, 2) desperation, 3) being averse to allopathic medicine and allopathic medical practice, 4) curiosity and chance, 5) ease of access, 6) institutional help, and 7) trial and error.
Conclusion
In selecting treatment options that include CAM, individuals draw on their social, economic, and biographical situations. Though exploratory, this study sheds light on some of the less examined reasons for CAM use.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=268744

Minimal evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use during chemotherapy is accompanied with a high prevalence of use and nondisclosure to health professionals. This study aimed to explore patients perspectives, experiences, support needs, and sources of information regarding CAM use during chemotherapy.
Materials and methods
Semi-structured interviews with ten adult participants who recently completed chemotherapy treatment at a large hospital in Australia were transcribed verbatim. Three investigators thematically analysed the interviews.
Results
These participants receiving chemotherapy valued CAMs as a natural complement to chemotherapy to improve wellbeing, with their use most strongly influenced by past experiences rather than expert advice.

Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is increasingly used in the treatment of asthma in children. In the studies conducted, it was stated that there was a standardization problem in CAM methods. Moreover, this situation raises the question of Which is the most widely used CAM method? in asthma treatment. This study aimed to determine the use of CAM methods in children who are followed up with the diagnosis of asthma.
Material and methods
The patients aged 410 years who were diagnosed with asthma by a physician in the past and who admitted to the Child Health and Diseases Polyclinic of a hospital issuing tertiary health service in Turkey were included in the study. The demographic data of patients and CAM methods used were examined.
Results
The median age of a total of 164 asthmatic children included in the study was 6.3 (410) years, and 58.3% of them were observed to be male. The median time to diagnosis of the patients was 2.0 (1; 105) months, mostly having multiple cough attacks per day (33.1%), and the rate of children with cough attacks at least once a month to awaken from sleep at night was 47.6%. Honey (36.6%) was found to be one of the most preferred biological-based therapies for families and was followed by molasses (16.9%), which were derived from herbal and natural products.
Conclusions
There are varying rates of CAM use in asthmatic children all over the world, and it was found that honey was used the most in our study. Atopy can be found in the etiology of asthmatic patients. Therefore, it should not be forgotten that using different CAM methods at the same time may pose a risk.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269035

and purpose: Acupoint therapy is suggested as a potential intervention for treating nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This review assessed current evidence for the effect of acupoint therapy on NAFLD.
Methods
Eight electronic databases were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of patients with NAFLD treated by acupoint therapy from their inception to August 2020. A meta-analysis of outcomes was conducted by RevMan 5.3.
Results
Sixteen RCTs with 1320 patients were included. Acupoint therapy was significantly associated with improvements in alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels. Additionally, acupoint therapy significantly reduced triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) levels. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels were also increased in NAFLD patients.
Conclusion
Compared with other treatments, acupoint therapy may improve liver function and lipid metabolism, making it an available treatment for NAFLD. Acupuncture has been widely used to treat diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in China as a complementary and alternative therapy. This study aims to summarize the characteristics and evaluate the methodology quality of the systematic reviews (SRs) regarding acupuncture for DPN.
Methods
A comprehensive literature search was performed from inception to February 2020. We assessed the methodological quality of the included SRs with the Assessment of Multiple Systematic Reviews 2 (AMSTAR 2) tool, adopted the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist to evaluate the reporting characteristics of included SRs, and utilized the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach to evaluate the quality of evidence for outcomes including total effective rate, sensory nerve conduction velocity, motor nerve conduction velocity and adverse events. One-way analysis of variance and multiple linear regression were conducted to evaluate the associations between characteristics and two index scores (PRISMA and AMSTAR 2).
Results
Eighteen SRs were included in this overview. The methodology quality of the included SRs ranged from very low to high. Only protocol registration and funding source reported were associated with the AMSTAR 2 index scores, while no variable showed significant difference in the PRISMA scores. The overall quality of evidence in included SRs ranged from very low to moderate.
Conclusion
This overview suggested beneficial effects of acupuncture on DPN, whereas the results should be interpreted with cautious owing to methodology flaws, providing reference for further improvement of the study design.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1744388121000748#!https:/ [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269092

Traumatic psychological events are thought to alter brain physiology, notably regions such as the thalamus and the limbic system, affecting personal choice, autonomy, and behavior. Innovative therapies are needed to address the diverse, mental and physical consequences of these changes. Trauma CenterTrauma Sensitive Yoga (TC-TSY) has shown promising results in clinical trials among individuals experiencing posttraumatic symptomatology.
Materials and methods
Using a qualitative, descriptive design, we examined the impact of TC-TSY training on the professional practice of seven practitioners who were certified yoga instructors and/or registered psychologists.
Results
The findings suggest TC-TSY training enriched their practices, chiefly through its choice-based, widely applicable approach; invitation- and mindfulness-based language; and building of therapeutic trust and attunement. Some participants questioned the accessibility and suitability of the training, as well as the rigidity of TC-TSY terminology.
Conclusion
More research is needed to examine potential outcomes of TC-TSY practice related to self-efficacy, coping, quality of life, and stress reduction among traumatized individuals.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269093

The benefits of written expressive disclosure (WED) to health are documented in a variety of healthy and clinical populations. This study investigates the effect of WED on health-related outcomes in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Methods
Adults (N = 189) meeting Rome III criteria for IBS were randomly assigned to write about their: (1) deepest thoughts and feelings about the most stressful life event of the past five years (n = 67), (2) deepest thoughts and feelings about their IBS (n = 61) or (3) daily activities in an objective manner (control condition; n = 61). Participants completed four 20-min writing sessions over 26 weeks. Gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms, healthcare utilization, health-related quality of life (HR-QOL), pain catastrophizing, and pain self-efficacy were assessed at baseline, one month post-writing completion, and three months post-writing completion.
Results
A significant group (combined WED vs. control) X time interaction was detected for healthcare utilization, F(1,147) = 6.16, p = 0.014, η2 = 0.04. Specifically, number of GI-related medical appointments significantly increased from baseline to 3-month follow-up in the control group, while no significant change was observed in the combined WED group. Among the WED group, individuals assigned to write about their IBS experienced greater improvements in pain self-efficacy than those assigned to write about a life stressor, F(1,92) = 3.89, p = 0.024, η2 = 0.08. GI symptom severity, HR-QOL, and pain catastrophizing improved significantly across groups over time, with no significant between-group differences.
Conclusion
Writing about one's deepest thoughts and feelings about IBS may increase pain self-efficacy and reduce healthcare utilization compared to control writing in adults with IBS.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269094

Hypnosis in labour and childbirth is a complex intervention. Both qualitative and quantitative assessment methods have been used, but have targeted different outcomes. We followed a synergistic approach and a reconciliation strategy to further understand and evaluate this intervention.
Methods
A mixed-method analysis of quantitative and qualitative evidence was conducted. The assessment of efficacy was based on a recent Cochrane review (9 trials, 2954 women randomised). Four qualitative studies and 4 case studies were included.
Results
The outcomes addressed by the qualitative studies (mostly concerning maternal experiences) and in the quantitative studies (mostly concerning analgesic use) overlapped slightly. Discrepancies across results from the two study types suggested that response shift issues could occur.

The objective of the present trial was to investigate the efficiency of the traditionally used 5% of pomegranate peel extract in treating gingival inflammation. Herein, 34 chronic gingivitis patients were randomized in a 1:1 ratio for four weeks in a controlled, double-blind clinical trial to evaluate the effect of the adjunctive use of a pulsating jet irrigator containing 5% pomegranate peel extract solution to nonsurgical periodontal therapy against a placebo in managing these patients' condition. No adverse reactions had been reported, and within the limits of this study, it may be concluded that pomegranate peel extract can serve as a promising alternative in managing chronic gingivitis. This trial is registered on the German clinical trials register (DRKS-ID: DRKS00010602). This paper aims to review articles that have evaluated the role of essential oil therapy in patients with rheumatic diseases.
Methodology
Systematic review. No study design or language limitation was applied.
Results
We have identified 13 articles, most of them were used in osteoarthritis (n = 4), rheumatoid arthritis (n = 3) and fibromyalgia (n = 3). Two studies included patients with RA and OA (n = 2). The number of people involved in the study varied from 9 to 162, where female sex was observed in 60100%. The age of the patients ranged from 36 to 78.3 years old and disease duration 111.67 years. The lavender essential oil was the most used, and then Ginger oil, Rosemary oil, and Rosmarinus officinalis. Time of oil use varied from 2 to 12 weeks. Importantly, all studies but one (91.6%) have demonstrated the efficacy of aromatherapy.
Conclusion
There are few reports on essential oils in rheumatic disease, mainly osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and fibromyalgia. All but one study have showed the efficacy of this complementary therapy.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269105

The purpose of this study was to assess physical therapist's beliefs, practice patterns, and barriers of incorporation of mindfulness meditation into the management of individuals with chronic dizziness.
Methods
An electronic survey was sent to physical therapists with experience treating individuals with dizziness and vestibular disorders. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were conducted.
Results
The majority of respondents agree that anxiety limits functional and participation outcomes with individuals with chronic dizziness and adoption of a mindfulness meditation practice could be helpful to address this. However, a much smaller percentage of respondents reported currently using these techniques a majority of time during their clinical practice.
Conclusion
Barriers exist that prevent the widespread implementation of meditation and mindfulness in physical therapy practice. Potential limiting factors highlight that further research is needed to explore these barriers and evaluate the outcomes of patients with chronic dizziness when meditation is applied in practice.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269106

Although there are many clinical reports on the use of pro/synbiotics and other microbial preparations to prevent postoperative infections and related complications in patients with Colorectal cancer (CRC), their effectiveness remains divided. Therefore, we collected relevant high-quality randomized controlled trial (RCT) studies and conducted systematic review and meta-analysis. We electronically searched online databases (the PubMed, EMBASE, MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Allied and Alternative Medieine (AMED), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and Weipu) for literature published until December 2020. These reports were rigorously screened, and the data extracted, assessed for risk of bias (ROB), and subjected to meta-analysis and subgroup analysis. Postoperative infections were the main criteria for outcomes. Nineteen high-quality articles were included, involving 1975 patients. Compared with the control group, the pro/synbiotics group had reduced total postoperative infections ((odds ratio)OR = 0.28, 95% (confidence interval)CI: 0.20; 0.39, p Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269107

This study aimed to determine the effect of acupressure on stress, fasting blood glucose (FBG) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HBA1C) in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Methods
In this randomized controlled clinical trial, sixty-six diabetic patients who met the inclusion criteria were randomly divided into intervention and sham groups. The intervention group applied self-acupressure to the desired points for a month. The sham group were asked to slightly touch the same points. The DASS-21 and FBG were measured before intervention, 24 h after the intervention for both groups. In addition, HBA1C was measured for both groups before intervention and three months after the beginning of the intervention. Data were analyzed with SPSS 15.
Results
Statistical data analysis of 60 patients showed that the mean FBG and the mean stress score of the intervention group reduced significantly after the intervention (p
Conclusion
Acupressure should be considered for diabetic patients to reduce their stress and FBG.Disponible en ligne : Oui En ligne : https://login.ezproxy.vinci.be/login?url=https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/a [...] Permalink : https://bib.vinci.be/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=269108

This study explored why the integration of traditional medicines with the biomedical healthcare system in Qokolweni in Eastern Cape, South Africa was stalling. The research employed qualitative research methods; participant observation and in-depth ethnographic interviews of community members, traditional healers, and nurses. The study found that: traditional medicines are widely used in Qokolweni due to accessibility and long-built trust; the practice is broad and not certified. To achieve the integration of traditional medicine into the conventional health systems, the central government needs to show political will by setting up regulatory strategies that provide for the scientific evaluation and certification of traditional medicines. This will build confidence among biomedical scientists and health practitioners, thereby fostering easy collaboration and integration.
