Nowadays, renal transplantation has become the most recommended procedure for patients with end-stage renal disease. However, it requires finding a suitable donor for each of these patients. Various types of donors exist and could influence the early graft function.
Several medical imaging examinations are involved in the assessing of the kidney allograft function during the first weeks after transplantation, namely renal scintigraphy and conventional ultrasound. These techniques could be performed after transplantation and provide complementary information. Firstly, renal scintigraphy provides information about the kidney grafts perfusion, extraction and excretion. Secondly, conventional ultrasound in B-mode provides information about kidneys morphology and dimensions. Doppler mode allows a fast assessing of renal perfusion and therefore is an efficient tool to detect postoperative vascular complications. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is an emerging medical imaging technique which allows assessing renal grafts microcirculation and could be useful to detect more accurately postoperative complications compared to conventional Doppler ultrasound. |
