Résumé : |
Objective: This narrative literature review aims to provide a critical appraisal and synthesis of the literature surrounding the benefits and challenges of implementing newborn and infant physical examination (NIPE) training into pre-registration midwifery education.
Methods: Because of the broad aim of the review, a narrative approach was chosen by the researcher. Elements of a systematic review were adapted to afford transparency in the way literature was chosen. Selected articles were critically appraised using a Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) to review the quality of the studies prior to inclusion. Thematic analysis was taken using an inductive approach. Results: Seven articles were selected for inclusion and from these, three principal themes were identified: lack of standardisation in curriculum design; midwifery supervision in practice; and student satisfaction. Conclusion: The literature demonstrates that key challenges exist when incorporating a pre-registration midwifery programme to include how NIPE is embedded, taught and assessed within curricula; there are concerns regarding clinical supervision and sign-off in practice that negatively affected the student experience. Conversely, benefits include acquisition of enhanced knowledge, fostering professional growth and confidence; perceived increased employability; and supported continuity of carer, which enriched student satisfaction. |
