Résumé : |
Background: Around a fifth of women who experience pregnancy in the UK experience perinatal loss. The majority go on to have a subsequent pregnancy within a year. Good-quality midwifery care that is tailored to the individual needs of women can enhance their pregnancy journey. However, there is limited guidance on how this care can be delivered, alongside a lack of information about midwives' experience in caring for this specialist group.
Aim: This research aimed to explore midwifery care for women experiencing rainbow pregnancy through the lens of the 'midwives' experience'. Methods: A mixed methods survey was conducted to gather data from midwives currently practising in the UK and their experience of caring for women having a rainbow pregnancy. The quantitative data were analysed descriptively and there was a thematic analysis of the qualitative data. Results: Midwives felt that care for women experiencing rainbow pregnancy should be sensitive and tailored to their complex needs, which are framed by the experience of previous perinatal loss. Many midwives felt what was needed to provide good-quality care was missing in practice, including specialist clinicians who could offer continuity of care. Conclusion: This research illuminated midwives' experiences of caring for women experiencing rainbow pregnancy. It highlighted that there are areas where further research is needed, such as exploring the feasibility of a midwife-led mental wellbeing service and an exploration of student midwives' experiences when caring for women experiencing rainbow pregnancy. |
