Both MRI and diagnostic ultrasound are useful in the diagnosis of plantar plate pathology. Due to its high sensitivity and wide availability, point-of-care ultrasound can be used to rapidly rule out plantar plate pathology in clinical settings. Patients requiring further interrogation of the plantar plate may benefit from further testing with MRI to better quantify and localize pathology, and to assess the joint collateral ligaments. When advanced injuries of the plantar plate or spring ligament are suspected, fat-suppressed MR images help to determine just how much native collagen is still present in the area. In cases where little healthy collagen remains, a nonatomic repair or the addition of suture tape augmentation may be preferable to direct repair alone. |
