Résumé : |
BACKGROUND: Nasal irrigation has been described as a safe, inexpensive, and welltolerated
method among children. In addition to improving nasal symptoms, it also improves quality of life, and decreases medication use. This technique is recommended with grade A evidence for the management of both chronic rhinosinusitis and allergic rhinitis in children. However, there is no consensus on good practice regarding nasal irrigation in infants. Main aim of this study was to reach clinical consensus about the parameters of nasal irrigation. METHODS: This modified Delphi study consisted of three consecutive rounds in which questionnaires regarding nasal irrigation were shared with Belgian experts (physiotherapists and physicians). The first-round questionnaire was elaborated based on the results of a survey on practice habits of the technique carried out on a total of 359 individuals (parents, childcare workers, and healthcare professionals). Consensus was defined in rounds two and three for items for which at least 75% of responses were in agreement or disagreement. RESULTS: The last round of questions featured the presence of 30 Belgian experts, with an average number (SD) of years of work experience of 13.6 (6.1) for physicians and 22.8 (7.4) for physiotherapists. Experts reached consensus on 48 items which referred to the following issues: the use of the technique, the solution and device used, the way of performing the technique, and the way of assessing the efficacy of the technique. CONCLUSION: This study provides the first Belgian consensus on good practice for nasal irrigation in infants. |
