Résumé : |
Aim: To investigate low-risk women's experiences of postpartum urinary incontinence.
Background: Childbirth is a significant risk factor for urinary incontinence in women, however contemporary research has failed to explain why women continue to live with its debilitating symptoms. In addition, comprehensive policies are lacking at both national and local level within maternity. Method: A methodical search strategy was employed. Comprehensive inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied to search results and thematic analysis of the qualitative data was undertaken. Findings: Four articles satisfied the inclusion criteria, Three core themes were identified: Normalisation, which encompassed advice from friends and family and influence from popular culture; Lack of education, which included deficient preparation and poor direct inquiry and Self-neglect, where women experienced feelings of shame and embarrassment, prioritisation of the baby, and poor mental health. Conclusion: Future practice must reduce the taboo surrounding postpartum urinary incontinence and empower women to have the tools and knowledge to access and understand credible information. This can be achieved through improvements to undergraduate training programmes, and the provision of clear guidance for midwives on the assessment of symptoms. National guidelines should consider the suitability of the booking appointment to address this issue, while midwives should ensure postnatal assessments are thorough, incorporating both physiological symptoms and mental health checks. Further research to gain valuable and diverse cultural insights is required. |
