Résumé : | The distal third of the leg is susceptible to various pathologies that require advanced soft tissue reconstruction. Open fractures, soft tissue injuries, ulcers related to diabetes, tumors, and ischemic wounds may be causative of soft tissue defects of the distal lower extremity. Management of complex soft tissue injuries in this region are challenging because of poor elasticity of the skin, the thin subcutaneous tissue covering the bone, multiple superficial tendons, and a lack of muscle bulk. Furthermore, poor venous outflow within the area often contributes to the presence of chronic edema that can lead to venous hypertension and subsequent ulcerations. These wounds have also shown increased morbidity and high rates of osteomyelitis, frequently resulting in limb amputation. |
