- Health care costs are on the increase; however, funding is not increasing at a commensurate rate. Therefore demonstrable cost-effectiveness is critical when selecting operation and implant type.
- Cost-effectiveness analysis (CEA) in hallux valgus surgery is severely lacking in the literature. Such analysis is complex to set up, involving multiple cost variables. - pragmatic approach to CEA research should involve looking at cost variables individually. Therefore, day case surgery, multimodal analgesia, and simultaneous surgery for bilateral cases show promise in safely reducing cost. - There is no CEA for minimally invasive surgery for hallux valgus. With some evidence of increased recurrence, requirement for additional equipment and more expensive implants it is unlikely to demonstrate superior cost-effectiveness. |
