| Résumé : | The research examined so far indicates that mothers who have encountered preterm birth can often experience physiological difficulties in meeting their infant's nutritional demands. It is also important to acknowledge that sometimes mothers will make an informed choice to not supply their own breast milk for their infant. Nonetheless, interrogation of the literature sugests that the health outcomes of preterm infants will be improved if they receive human milk. This paper will, therefore, examine the role of donor human milk (DHM) in the care of preterm infants. In the event that maternal milk is unavailable, DHM or breast milk substitute (BMS) are the only existing options for nutrition, and in the absence of maternal milk, both national and international organisations recommend the use of screened pasteurised human milk. |
